Resume Tip: Outcomes vs. Activities
Talent PlusA resume of one recent graduate included this job description: "Sales Consultant – Big Retailer in the Mall – Developed customer relationships, product knowledge of all merchandise, handled money at registers, coordinated new clothing lines."

The problem? Almost every sales consultant who has ever worked for a retailer at the mall has performed these duties, said Kyle Bruss of Talent Plus. Great resumes focus on outcomes in the job experience section – things like, "exceeded sales goals by 115%", "consistently ranked in top 10 of all sales consultants", and "proficient knowledge of 3,450 merchandise items."

"Focus on outcomes, not activities, when explaining your work experiences," Bruss said. "When done effectively, the recruiter can imagine you in the role he or she is working to fill."

Career Corner: Elevator SpeechCareer Prep Night
So you're on an elevator, minding your own business, when you realize you are standing next to the CEO of the organization for which you would like to work. What do you do? This is the perfect time to use the "elevator speech", a brief but engaging introduction designed to initiate a conversation with anyone you might encounter—whether you're in an elevator, waiting for the bus or attending a professional networking event.

Start your elevator speech with a confident greeting and hand shake followed by your name and what your connection is to that person, personally and/or professionally. Next, state what you do, including some of your activities and what makes you unique in that capacity. Finish with a friendly, "It is a pleasure to meet you," and be ready for the conversation that follows.
